All shelter animals dream of finding their forever home, but some are always passed over by adopters for no fault of their own. Some animals look a little different, and it seems that puts people off from wanting to bring them home.
Now, one shelter cat named Espresso is looking for her forever home — but people keep overlooking her due to her unusually different-sized eyes.
On August 2, the Ohio SPCA & Humane Society shared a post about a cat in their care named Espresso. (She’s named after the hit Sabrina Carpenter song: “That’s that me, espresso.”)
Espresso came to them as an injured stray who was nursing babies. Her injuries have healed, and her children have all gone off to their forever homes — but for the past month, Espresso has struggled to find a home of her own.
The shelter staff suspects that potential adopters may be passing on her over the way she looks — namely her eyes, which are noticeably different sizes.
It’s not clear if the cause was a birth defect or an old injury, but Espresso’s right eye is smaller than her left. Thankfully, it doesn’t bother the cat at all or affect her health.
While her carers think her eyes make her look “unique,” it’s possible that people are ignoring her in favor of more conventional-looking cats. “Unfortunately people will see something different about an animal and tend to not give them a chance,” Ohio SPCA wrote on Facebook.
So Espresso is still looking for a home that will love her just the way she is. The shelter described her as a “quiet but very friendly girl” who does well with other cats and people of all ages.
Adoption forms can be downloaded at the shelter’s website and emailed to adoptionsohiospca@gmail.com. Espresso and all the other adoptable cats can be viewed during their operation hours, Wednesday-Friday from 2-7 PM or Saturday from noon-4 pm.
All of the shelter’s cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped.
No animal should be ignored because of the way they look — we think Espresso is beautiful and unique and hope she finds a home soon!
